World Food Summit 2009

The third World Food Summit took place in Rome from 16 to 18 November 2009. The Council of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) had invited members to attend.

Due to the food-price crisis last year and the current global economic crisis, the number of people suffering from hunger and malnutrition has risen to over one billion. In the light of these developments, the Council of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) convened another World Food Summit.
The aim of the summit was to signal the start of a new structure of international cooperation in the area of global food security. The aim was to carry on from the G8 resolutions passed at the L'Aquila summit and the G20 resolutions adopted at the Pittsburgh summit and to lay the foundations for establishing a Global Partnership for Agriculture and Food Security.

Federal Minister Aigner emphasised at the summit the importance of efficient joint international action between governments, international organisations, civil society and the business sector. "Every available hand and every available cent should be used as efficiently as possible in order to make as big a difference as possible in the fight against hunger and malnutrition."

The summit declaration contains a further success: "The explicit reference to the right to food strengthens the position of the individual and takes governments up on their promise to achieve food security," emphasised the Minister.

Germany continues to advocate that the right to food should be given broad recognition to consolidate the rights-based approach in international efforts to fight hunger and malnutrition.
