Global food situation & FAO

Ilse Aigner

"Achieving global food security is one of the greatest challenges of our time."(Federal Minister Ilse Aigner)

Approximately one billion people currently suffer from hunger and chronic malnutrition. The economic and financial crisis, the consequences of climate change, and the decrease in the amount of usable agricultural land worldwide will all exacerbate the situation.

The fight against hunger is one of the Federal Government’s top priorities. Investments in agriculture in less developed countries boost the local population’s purchasing power and constitute a vital contribution towards realising the human right to food. The BMELV provides annual funds of 8.3 million Euros for FAO projects on food security (FAO - Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations).
