The Scientific Advisory Board on Consumer and Food Policies at the BMELV

The Scientific Advisory Board on Consumer and Food Policies at the BMELV was appointed for the first time in September 2002. The appointment period is three years; in December 2011 the board has been appointed for the fourth appointment period. The Advisory Board is an interdisciplinary body which is to assist in further developing consumer policies. The independent body works in an honorary capacity and draws up scientific opinions and statements.

The Advisory Board’s main tasks include reviewing goals and principles of consumer policies, further developing consumer policy instruments, covering and analysing consumer interests and presenting them in a way that allows for specific measures to be developed. The Advisory Board is also to deal with food policy and consumer health protection issues.

The Advisory Board consists of 12 members working and researching in various fields relating to consumer policy issues. Its members are appointed by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection on the suggestion of the Advisory Council. Members can be appointed three times in a row. The chair is elected by the Advisory Board.
