First German-Chinese inter-governmental consultations

Müller: "German-Chinese cooperation in food and agricultural policies contributes towards tackling future challenges"

In the bilateral talks held during the first German-Chinese intergovernmental consultations (in Berlin on 27 - 28 June 2011), Dr. Gerd Müller, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Agriculture, and Mr. Changfu Han, Chinese Minister of Agriculture, reaffirmed the long-standing close cooperation between both Ministries of Agriculture.

This cooperation is to be realigned in the face of the global challenges. "The main challenges of the future lie in safeguarding the food supply of a growing world population and securing the energy supplies whilst coping with the impact of climate change", said the Parliamentary State Secretary. "The agricultural and food industries are core sectors for mastering these challenges. Germany and China will make their contribution to a sustainable solution of the problems facing us also in the agricultural sector and will resolutely lead the way", added Müller.

For instance, a joint work and action plan will be drawn up for the next five years that will meet these challenges. "The centerpiece for a sustainable development of agriculture in both countries is our successful cooperation in agricultural technology and science that will date back thirty years already in 2012", Müller stated.

Specific projects that were adopted included, for example, the establishment of a German-Chinese Centre for Innovative Technologies in Animal Breeding and enhanced cooperation in the field of renewable energies, notably with regard to biomass.

Parliamentary State Secretary Dr. Müller and Minister Han signed a "Declaration on the intensification of agricultural cooperation". Both regard the prospects for continuing the successful cooperation between Germany and China in agricultural matters as extremely promising. "Germany that occupies a leading position in agricultural technologies and China as a large farming nation complement each other perfectly", Müller said in conclusion.
