Aigner: Results of the World Food Summit point the way ahead
"The Global Partnership for Agriculture and Food Security established at the World Food Summit in Rome points the way to the future," said the Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV), Ilse Aigner, on the occasion of the World Food Summit in Rome. "In doing so, we are signalling the start of a new structure of international cooperation in world food affairs," the Minister went on to say.
Federal Minister Aigner emphasised the importance of efficient and joint action among governments, international organisations, civil society and the business sector. "Every hand and every cent available should be used in the most efficient manner in order to make a real difference in the fight against hunger and malnutrition."
The summit declaration contains another success: "The explicit reference to the right to food strengthens the position of the individual and takes governments up on their promise to achieve food security," the Minister explained.
This rights-based approach to tackling hunger requires good governance and national responsibility for food security. This includes the establishment of national strategies for food security and for legally secured regulations on access to land and water. The Federal Government has lent its support to establishing a right to food for many years. The government was a key driver behind the adoption of the FAO Voluntary Guidelines on the Right to Food in 2004 and also provided financial support to the FAO to implement these guidelines. More that 1 billion people are currently suffering from hunger and chronic malnutrition. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), 80 percent of all people afflicted by hunger live in rural areas, predominantly as small-scale farmers or landless workers.
